Fishing Lough Melvin is the most important salmon and trout fishery in the North West of Ireland. It straddles the border with Northern Ireland, but the major portion of the Lough lies County Leitrim. The salmon season opens on 1st January on the Drowes River and the 1st May on the River Duff. Spring fish are taken on the fly in the Rossinver Bay area, from late March and April. The grilse run begins in June and fish are taken all over the lough from Kinlough to Rossinver.
Lough Melvin boasts four species of trout; brown, ferox, gillaroo and sonaghan. Each are clearly distinguished by colour, size and shape. While they may share the same breeding grounds, they do not interbreed.
In addition to game fishing on Lough Melvin, there is course fishing available on nearby Glenade Lake.
Walking There are many pleasant countryside rambles around Kinlough and Lough Melvin. For the more adventurous, Glenade is a must, it is set in a valley and is surrounded by steep cliff-like limestone hills. The Rivers Bonet and Duff rise in Glenade and the area is full of waterfalls and lakes.
